Fishing has been great!

The corp is releasing one unit for about 4 hours in the morning.  The water is getting to Lobo around 2:00.

Fly fishing.

San Jaun worms (Red)  have been working great.  Take some caddis with you as well, They are starting to hatch.

Spin Fishing,

Bait fishing is awesome at the moment.  Wax worms have been the key.  Use them with a yellow or pink power egg.

See you on the river.

Thanks

Chris

LOW WATER!!!

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

We finaly have low water, and fishing couldn’t be any better.  The caddis should start hatching anytime also.  The corp is still turning on one unit around 7:00 each morning.  Therefore, there is great low water fishing until 2 0r 3 in the afternoon.

Fly Fishing

Dead drifting sow-bugs (14) in the natural, light, and dark colors have been doing great.  San Juan worms (red and pink) have also been a must.  Also, be sure to care some elk hair caddis (size 16 & 14 tied in tan & olive) with you in-case there is a hatch.

 Spin Fishing:

Tight lining white or yellow power bait tipped with a wax worm has been very productive.  We have also seen a lot of fish caught on night crawlers.

When the water gets up in the afternoon try some gold or silver spoons, or a small rainbow colored crank bait.

See you on the river and have a happy Easter,

Chris

Water update.

Friday, March 21st, 2008

The corp is supposed to turn off the water at 9 o’clock this morning.  There is flooding where the Red dumps into the White.  Therefore, they have to stop generating until the water goes down.  The fishing should be great!!!

No Water!!!  Well, almost…

The corp turned the water off for one day to keep us from flooding away.  The fishing was great!  We boated over 30 fish on a half day trip.  We caught fish on tan sow bugs (14), Copper Johns (14), but the money fly was red San Juan worms.

The water came back up Tuesday evening, and with all the rain it will be awhile until we see bottom again.

However, the fish are hungry.  Bait fishing has been doing very well.  The bait guides have been bringing in boat loads.  The key is using more weight than normal (1/2 oz).  Wax worms and power bait or Night Crawlers have been doing great.  Also you might try small bait shrimp.  They have been catching some nice fish.

See you on the river,

Chris

Fishing Report 3-11-08.

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

The report will be short this week.  They have been releasing so much water that I haven’t been on the river.  The corp is releasing both units full speed, and the flood gates are open.  I’m told we can expect this until the 28th of this month.

Fly fishing is pretty much a wash at the moment.  There is just to much water. Fish can still be caught on bait.  However, you must be in a boat, and I highly suggest getting a guide.  Its very tricky catching fish in this high water, but our guides do it all the time.  Also, it can be dangerous out there, so its good to have someone that spends a lot of time on the river.  That’s about all for this week.  Be safe out there, and pray for low water.

Tons of water!!!  That pretty much sums up fishing on the Little Red at the moment.  Southwest Power have had 2 units on since the 26th.  The good news is, the water is clear and they shouldn’t keep the water on for too much longer.

The water might be high, but that doesn’t stop us from catching fish.  Bait fishing has been very good from a boat.  Fisherman have been drifting power eggs and wax worms using the white river rig (see the below pic). Night crawlers pumped up with are are also worth a try.

Lure fishing has still be good.  count down rapalas (cd9,cd7)  in the brown trout, rainbow trout, and the fire tiger colors have been producing good fish.

Fly Fishing has been pretty tough because of the water.  Wading has been out of the question.  It’s a good time for the novice to hire a guide.  Heavy streamers on heavy sink tip lines have been producing.  Also, try a uv tan sowbug (14) or a copper john on a 13 to 14 foot 5x leader.  Be sure to use a large indicator and at least a BB size split shot.

See you on the river!
