Fishing has been awesome!! The corp. is releasing water from 10:00am to 10:00pm. This pattern gives us a very nice window of fishing. The water is low in the mornings until about 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Lobo is 17 river miles from the dam, so it takes 6 hours from the time the corp turns on two generators for the water to raise at Lobo. It takes 8 hours for the water to raise if the corp. turns on one unit.
Fly Fishing:
Fly fishing couldn’t be any better. We have been catching tons of fish in the mornings on a heavily weighted san jaun worm. As the water falls out change to a lighter rig. Try some some sort of bead head nymph. Something like a sow bug or a cooper john should work great.
Spin Fishing:
Silver Spoons waxed the fish this weekend. Roster tails also caught a bunch or fish. Bait fishing has also been great. Yellow or pink power eggs tipped with a wax worm have been producing the most fish.
Also remember that the game & fish doesn’t allow fishing with treble hooks when using bait anymore.
Have a great week. See you on the river,
Chris
Low Water!!
We have had low water every morning this week. The Corp is turning on two units of water at around ten in the morning, so we have low water until around 2 in the afternoon.
Fishing has been awesome!!! San Jaun worms and sowbugs have been working great. Streamers such as wolly buggers have also been catching a ton of fish.
Spin fishing with spoons and roster tails have also been catching a ton of fish. Pink and yellow power bait have also been doing good when tipped with a wax worm.
I’m not sure how long the water will be down, so now is the time to get on the river.
See you out there,
Chris
Sorry in the delay of the Fishing Report, but I have been on the river a ton. Fishing is great!!!! Ours spin fishing guides are bringing in record numbers!! They have been fishing with everything and anything, but mainly Night crawlers.
Water release has been pretty constant. The corp is releasing about 3000 cfs (1 generator) of water around the clock, making for perfect conditions. Its not to high and not to low. That being said, I sill wouldn’t anchor. The current can still be strong at times, so drifting is your best bet.
Fly fishing has been great also. There is too much water to wade, but we have been catching a ton of fish from the boat. We are using high water rigs so it is a little different than normal. If you are not experienced in boat or high water fishing, now is the time to get a guide. You could learn a lot, and catch some great fish.
Also I’d like to say congrats to my friend Jamie Rouse. Jamie has just been named the 2007 Orvis guide of the year!!
See you on the river,
Chris
